Why locum?

Becoming a locum is a life style choice – if you are looking for flexibility, here’s where you can find it. You will have the opportunity to select when and where you would like to work. You can expect excellent rates of pay, the opportunity to build up your experience with varied employers and types of practice and the freedom of being independent.

What do I need to register?

You will need an up-to-date CV, your RCVS/RVN number (if applicable), proof of Right to work such as your passport or birth certificate and proof of national insurance number together with the details of two employment referees and details for payment. A full UK driving licence will be required if a vehicle is to be provided.

Do I provide my own tunics and scrubs?

Most locums provide their own tunics, particularly if you are larger or smaller than average. Some practices can provide tunics but they may be older and ill fitting. You may also like to take some of your own equipment such as stethoscopes and scissors.

Is my accommodation provided and what type of accommodation can I expect?

Depending on the assignment, accommodation may be provided. If accommodation is required you can expect a night room in a hospital, a room in a shared house, a flat above a surgery or a room in a B&B. Bedding is normally provided unless otherwise stated. Please note that not all accommodation will allow animals; always check before taking your pets with you.

Do I need insurance?

Under the RCVS code of practice all vets must have their own liability insurance, covering them to the correct level for the species they are treating. You may find that some practices will cover your insurance whilst you are working on an assignment for them but you may be liable if a claim is made after completion of the assignment. Therefore we strongly recommend that you take out your own insurance cover.

How will I get paid?

Pet Medic Recruitment provides a full payment service for its candidates. This guarantees that our locums are paid on a weekly basis and veterinary practices can easily engage locums in a compliant manner without the hassle of administration. We offer a choice of payment methods including via an umbrella organisation or, as a limited company. Unfortunately due to the nature of the work we are not able to offer an HMRC compliant self-employed payment option.
